The triplets are just 2 days from their 3rd birthday. They are officially excited about holidays. They awoke this morning to find their new, personalized Easter bags with a few goodies (Peeps, bubble wands, Easter bracelets for the girls, Matchbox cars for the boy, and lots of stickers). It wasn't much, but plenty for their age. We put some bunny ears on & off they hopped! They had their first experience coloring eggs, and it was a good one. Sydney ended up with blue fingers! We enjoyed an afternoon at Independence Park in Greenwood followed by our small Easter dinner at home. It was just me, John & the triplets. No family to celebrate with this year. Dad was down last weekend, Jenny is in North Carolina with her girls & grandchildren, and of course John's parents are in Texas.

We all enjoyed our ham, potatoes, shells & cheese & green beans. It was simple to prepare, just the way I like it! Then we surprised the triplets with an Easter egg hunt in the backyard. The Easter Bunny hid quarters, Skittles & Reese's Peanut Butter Bunnies. The girls are excited about the candy, but not Noah. He wants nothing to do with candy, but enjoys marshmallows. Oh, the Peeps were rejected by all so they are in the trash already.

I've ordered an egg-less cake for the triplets preschool birthday party on Tuesday. One student has an egg allergy. I'm taking some apple slices & fresh blueberries also. The triplets love their fruit. We've put together 21 goody bags with stickers, bubbles & a Crayola magnetic frame ready for coloring. Hoping they have a great time with their little friends. We'll have their official Dora & Diego themed party next Sat. at our home. Keeping my fingers crossed for good weather so we can have their bounce house up. Also waiting on the arrival of their new Radio Flyer tricycles, red for Noah, and pink for the girls. Can't wait to see all 3 on their trikes. Having their 3 year pictures taken the end of May outdoors so planning some with their trikes. I'm so excited!

Kisses to my mom in Heaven.

Love,

Amy

Tree Trouble

On Christmas Day, I mentioned to my brother-in-law, Phil, that I was ready to take our tree down. He informed me that taking the tree down before Jan. 1 could result in bad luck. Well, I knew we wouldn't really take the tree down until the new year. We are exhausted and not looking forward to the additional work.

Yesterday, Dec. 26th, I was attempting to free Noah's remote control car from behind the tree when a heard a cracking noise followed by a falling tree. Thankfully, I was quick enough to grab a hold before it came crashing down on 1 or more of my 3 children nearby. Basically, the tree stand frame broke and the tree had to be dismantled. I was literally holding the tree up with 1 hand and removing not so fragile ornaments with the other. Emily, standing close by said "Don't worry Mommy, we'll help you." My brilliant and helpful children carried these ornaments into our kitchen and placed them on the table. I would guess they made a dozen or more round trips with ornaments. John then found a make shift brace for the tree while we removed the glass ornaments and lights. Then, one by one, the kids carried each & every tree branch to me in the kitchen so they could be placed in totes for storage. Talk about teamwork!!! All we could think about was the Wonder Pets theme song "What kind of work, teamwork."

Anyway, I don't really believe in superstitions, but even if the old saying is true about bad luck when taking trees down before Jan. 1, I think we qualify for an exemption!!!

This was really hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a Happy & Prosperous New Year!!!

Tis the Season

The kids are very excited about Christmas this year. I never dreamed they would have any concept of this holiday. I was so wrong! We have visited Santa 3 times already, and they want to go back for more. Noah says "I love Santa" and Sydney is consistently asking for a baby (we think she means a real live baby). All three are asking for presents (nothing in particular)! Many of our tree ornaments keep being rearranged. They can hardly keep their hands off the tree. Christmas morning is going to be a blast.

Merry Christmas & God Bless You!

Amy

Ironic

So we took the kids to a really great park yesterday afternoon. They love the slides, and everything else it has to offer. I noticed a couple of little girls who appeared to be identical twins. It turns out they had a brother the same age also. Yes, there was another set of triplets (GGB) at the same park. In addition, they were also 2-1/2 years old. This family was actually visiting from Bloomington, IL.

It's official, Sydney is completely potty trained. Emily will hopefully show more interest soon, and Noah, well let's just say, it's going to be a while! The triplets were moved into the 3 year olds room at preschool today. According to their former teachers, they are more advanced than the other children their age. In fact, one of the new teachers already commented that they know more than the 3 year olds. Once again, I am so thankful for the abilities they are demonstrating. All three can correctly spell their names and count to 20. Emily is calling out octagon at each stop sign.

The kids really seemed excited about Halloween because of the decorations. They loved out numerous ghosts and our witch who crashed into they yard. We hung orange LED pumpkin lights. The outside looked appropriate for the occasion. It was definitely child friendly. Nothing terribly scary. I can't wait to host Halloween parties for their classmates! We took the kids trick-or-treating for approximately 10 minutes on Oct. 31st. It was too chilly for them to be out. They were all dressed in personalized scrubs, girls in pink, Noah in blue. They looked quite cute, but wouldn't pose for pictures. We can't get them to stay still long enough. Their Grandpa Cheesman spent that weekend with us so he was able to join us on our limited venture out.

I've recently started singing "Jingle Bells" around the kids. They have already picked up the 1st verse of the song. They really do amaze us all the time. I'm so excited for the upcoming Christmas holiday. I think they are going to love it this year because of the lights and yard ornaments. Like last year, we plan to be conservative when it comes to presents. The kids are too young to understand Christmas and simply don't ask for things yet. Well, I take that back, the girls want pink & purple babies.

Not sure yet if we will see Grandma & Grandpa Ayres for Christmas. They may have plans to spend the holiday with some of their other grandchildren. If they are reading this, I hope they'll visit soon. Emily, Noah & Sydney keep asking for Grandma.

The last few months have been hard on us. Losing my mom was crushing to John and I. We have both battled the flu bug and he's also had a bout with Bronchitis. Emily and Sydney just recently recovered from ear infections, and now Emily is running another high fever. This season is already frustrating us. We have to miss work due to our personal illness or a child's illness, and we have no family to help out here. God, please protect our jobs!

As bad as things have gotten around here, I have to keep focusing on all our blessing. We have each other, 3 beautiful and healthy children, and a promising future.

I would ask that you not only pray for my family, please pray for my good friend Heather Cundiff. She lost her only child, Tyler, on Nov. 4th due to complications from H1N1. Tyler was just a couple months shy of his 15th birthday. Like many others who are losing their battle with this illness, Tyler had pre-existing health conditions. Most notably, he had Cerebral Palsy. Some of you might remember Heather from my wedding. She was the bridesmaid in our wedding.

Amy

Bookworms!

The triplets are thriving at preschool. They are at the top of their class. They already know most of their colors, shapes, alphabet, counting to 15 (and higher), and so much more. We are thrilled with the abilities they are demonstrating at such an early age. Like I've mentioned before, we work with them a lot to develop their minds!

The triplets love books. Noah is literally sitting down with "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?" and reading on his own. He has the book committed to memory. It's so cute! Sydney says her favorite book is Dr. Seuss' "Foot Book." Like Noah, she can recite most of the book simply by looking at the pages. Emily, she loves to sing "Old McDonald Had a Farm" and "The Wheels on the Bus" while looking at their respective books.

All 3 are so bright. They are reciting words represented by various letters. For example, M is for Mommy. They now can recite their first & middle names (and each others). I'm now working on their last name. Oh, did I mention they know their parents given name. When I say, "what's Mommy's name" they exclaim "Amy" and "John."

Sydney is mostly potty trained now. She has been in panties for 1 week now (except nap & bedtime). She is doing an incredible job with very few accidents. I'm going to give it another week or so, and Emily will be wearing panties also. She does a fairly good job at preschool using the potty. I think putting her in panties will encourage more consistency. Noah, he really doesn't show any interest in potty training yet. He'll sit on the potty, but very briefly. That's ok, I'm not tripping over potty training like so many parents do. Yes, it will be cheaper when not purchasing diapers for 3, but it will come in time.

Anyway, I know I'm bragging, but isn't that what parents are supposed to do. I'm so thankful they are so bright and capable. There is always concern about development of babies born as multiples and prematurely. We lucked out, ours are great physically and developmentally.

Life has been difficult these last 4 weeks since losing my Mom. I do miss her tremendously. I've shed so many tears, with no signs of them drying up anytime soon. I am so grateful for the 2-1/2 years she had with her youngest grandchildren.

Amy

Sad Day

Ok, this day was more than sad. It ranks as the worst day of my life. Today, my mother Barbara Cheesman, was laid to rest. Her death was unexpected and the cause hasn't been determined. My parents were supposed to spend the weekend with us but my mom started experiencing some flu like symptoms late Thursday evening. She died at home around 7a on September 13, 2009, just 2 days after her 68th birthday.

In spite of today's events, John & I had to get back to Indianapolis to pick the triplets up from preschool and follow our normal routine. Just hours after saying my final goodbye to mom, I was bathing my beautiful children. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of shutting down to mourn our loss. We have the rest of the week off work, so we plan to rest and work toward moving forward as my mom would want.

Today has been a mixture of emotions. My morning really started on a bright note when Noah exclaimed "I'm so happy". I really tried to hold it together around my children, but I wasn't completely successful. Each time I teared up, Emily & Sydney would ask "what's wrong Mommy" followed by some soothing techniques. Soon they would follow up with "it's ok Mommy". We have truly been blessed by compassionate and bright children.

I'm so happy for the time my mom spent with her youngest grandchildren. She showered them with love, and enjoyed the affection given to her. My mom was super! I always let her know how appreciated she was, but I really don't think I told her how much I loved her. My mom was the most generous and giving person I've ever known. She always put others above herself. Her friends, family and church had great respect for her.

I'll post an update on the triplets soon. For now, I really want to honor my mom, the greatest woman in my life.

I LOVE YOU MOM!

Amy

Ear Tubes

Noah got his ear tubes this morning and all went well. He was cranky for about 30 minutes after waking up and slept for a couple hours upon arriving home. When he awoke this afternoon, he was his usual happy and jumpy boy. He ate 3 bowls of applesauce & a slice of toast. By dinner, he was an eating machine.

The girls missed him at preschool today. They walked around saying "Noah" throughout the day. When I brought the girls home, Sydney walked up to Noah and hugged him. It was so cute.

The last couple of nights have been rough here. The babies just aren't sleeping well. All 3 have stuffy noses. I'm praying for a restful night as I've only had about 6 hours of sleep in 2 days. John's not feeling well so he need more sleep too.

Amy

Zoo Outing

We visited the Indianapolis Zoo today for the first time this season. This was the triplets 2nd trip to the zoo. Last year, they really couldn't see much from their vantage point. But today, they had a lot of close encounters. They saw a walrus, penguins, sharks, polar bear, giraffe and much more. The coolest part of the visit was watching an elephant bathing. We could have pet the elephant at the conclusion of the show, but the triplets were tired and we needed them in their stroller!

The girls did a lot of waving at other guests. I believe they are working on their pageant waves! All in all, the visit was fun and we are looking forward to returning soon.

Amy

P.S. Noah is getting ear tubes on Wed., June 10th. The procedure should only take 5 or so minutes, and they'll just put him to sleep with gas (no needles). We hope this will fend off future ear infections!

Learning everyday!

As parents, along with the grandparents, we have been very diligent reading and singing to our children. They have a great recognition of objects (some as simple as ball, others such as guitar). We've been working on the alphabet, but wow, they are nearly reciting their entire ABC's now! In addition, the girls can really sing "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" along with the song.

Noah isn't as vocal as the girls are. Sometimes, I wonder if he has the same knowledge as the girls. I received proof that he knows more than he lets on. He was sitting on the floor with an alphabet puzzle. Not only was he able to place the pieces in their respective spots, he was naming each letter as he picked them up. He was so excited. Lots of "yeah" and clapping for himself. Of course, I cheered him right along.

In summary, I truly believe every word I read about the importance of reading and talking to infants/toddlers/children. We have done our best to encourage learning from birth. John & I decided early on to minimize exposure to adult television programming. We almost never watch any programming outside of Noggin (exposure to music, culture, etc) or videos such as "Signing Time" that has taught them a great amount of sign language. Sure, sometimes I turn on HGTV to check out a home makeover show, but it's very infrequent.

I pray our children will learn with ease and never struggle when they enter school. I also pray they'll always enjoy our time spent together. They generally have our full attention when they're awake! Can I say, exhausting!!!

Amy

Preschool & Illness

Oh boy, the last 2 weeks have been difficult. All 3 kids caught a cold in the first few days at preschool (2 developed ear infections). Noah has been to the Immediate Care Center and the pediatrician. The girls have fared pretty well but our son has truly suffered. His ears have been painful and this infection just doesn't want to leave his little body. We are on his 3rd antibiotic and just starting to see signs of improvement.

We've already missed 3 days out of 14. This new arrangement has been quite expensive when considering the tuition paid, dr co-pays and scripts. I hope this won't be a trend for the triplets.

The kids are starting to adjust to their new routine. What started with 1 child crying in the morning has resulted in all 3 crying now--yikes! They are settling pretty soon after John & I leave. That I am thankful for. Nap time is still touch and go. Their naps are fairly short when compared to naps in their cribs.

There are going to be great learning opportunities for the kids. The girls are starting to sing their ABC's! Noah's even chimed in. They enjoy particiating in circle time (stories, shapes, numbers, alphabet). Some days I'm not sure preschool is worth the trouble, other days I'm certain it's worth any sacrifice.

Please pray for Noah's full recovery and good health for all 3.

Amy

Preschool-Day 3

Noah did great again and the girls did good also. Sydney got off to a rough start. She was so worked up about John & I leaving that she puked a bit. Other than that, she remained clingy but managed to have some fun also. Unlike yesterday, Emily napped 2 hours! In fact, Sydney did also. I know the teachers had to be relieved!

All 3 woke this am with some cold symptoms. How can this happen by Day 3? Anyway, the evening seemed to be going well. We ate spaghetti for dinner, John bathed all 3 and we had them in bed at 7:45p. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse. Sydney vomited 2 times in a 15 minute period which resulted in completely changing her bedding & pajamas 2 times. While trying to get her to sleep in the nursery, Noah woke up crying and wouldn't settle. John & I took turns with both babies to get them asleep. Noah just went back to bed around 10:20p.

This day is ending in pure frustration. I'm running on approximately 3 hrs sleep because the girls were both restless last night which resulted in my being awake much of the night.

Off to bed and I hope things remain quiet now. I've already called for a vacation day tomorrow since Sydney can't go to preschool with her symptoms.

Amy

Preschool-Day 2

Another stellar day for Noah. He hugged every person who entered the classroom, played happily and napped for 2 hours! He is quite the charmer!

The girls had some tearful moments, but overall, day two was noticeable better. Both really enjoyed singing time and circle time (stories, alphabet, numbers, etc). Emily didn't nap (wanted nothing to do with the cot) and Sydney only slept 20 minutes. One teacher, Miss Stephanie, was impressed when she discovered that Emily knows her colors! I mentioned that Sydney knows her colors as well, and Noah is working on them. In fact, Emily can count from 1-10 independently, and the others are pretty close. We are now focusing on our alphabet.

Amy

P.S. Emily is conserving water while brushing her teeth. She turns the water off between rinses. It's so cute.

Preschool-Day 1

I am left with mixed emotions after leaving our children for 10-1/2 hours with complete strangers. It was pouring rain when we dropped them off, and pouring rain when I picked them up.

Surprisingly, Emily seemed very comfortable with the early, unfamiliar faces. Not so surprising, Noah was right at home. Sydney was more reserved and expressed some emotion when we said our "goodbyes" and left. They were the 1st children to arrive in the 2-year-old room at 7a.

Sydney spent much of the day in the arms of the preschool teachers. She was very needy and somewhat whiny. We had a rough night sleeping last evening so I'm sure that played a big role in her mood today.

Emily started out strong but her mood went downhill around 10a. The teacher reported that the girls both appeared very tired by that time. At home, they would be taking their 1st nap. Preschool offers one afternoon nap.

Noah had a great time. He ate, played and even napped without a paci. We decided to take this opportunity to wean him from the pacifier during nap time.

The girls didn't eat well and they had some problems with drinking from open cups. Two out of three children came home in different clothes than they started out wearing. The soaking of stained clothing is just beginning! Their naps were very short, but heck, we weren't sure they would sleep outside the crib.

All in all, day 1 wasn't horrible. Sure, it would be easier to keep them home, but that is no longer an option. I hope they really become comfortable and settled within a couple of weeks.

Well, I'm exhausted and heading to bed. Please keep our family in your prayers while we continue to face my possible job loss.

Amy

2 Years Old Today!!!

Yes, the triplets are officially 2 years old. It's hard to believe we started with 3 hour feedings (24 bottles daily) and countless diapers just 2 years ago. Born at 35 weeks, all weighing slightly over 4 lbs, they have grown to 24+ lbs and full of energy. We are fortunate to have 3 healthy, beautiful and generally happy children. All 3 are learning sponges. They love being read to and can name most animals/objects in their books. Emily is easily counting from 1-10 unassisted while Noah is working on mastering the same skill. Sydney is also capable of reciting her numbers, she's just not always willing.

Emily is a bundle of fun. Her laugh is contagious and her smile so bright. Those sparkling blue eyes are captivating. She is full of spunk and loves to say phrases like "Oh my goodness" countless times. She is beautiful in every way!

Noah is the bouncing boy I never knew I wanted before the pregnancy. He has the biggest smile and full of affection. Of course like any boy, he's becoming somewhat of a bully to his sisters. Seriously, he's usually just playing with the girls but he tends to be more aggressive than they are. The girls don't always appreciate his hugs, but we do!

Sydney is our cutie pie who's tilt of the head will get her most anything her heart desires. She loves to hug and craves our full attention. Sydney really wants all eyes on her. She a bright girl and we love her so! She is also our most stubborn child.

Our friends, family and both sets of grandparents celebrated their birthday this past Saturday. The party theme was Elmo and the kids really had a fabulous time. We purchased a Little Tikes bounce house with a slide. All the party guests (children) enjoyed their time jumping. Their Aunt Jenny also brought some additional outdoor toys for their enjoyment.

On another note, I'm still uncertain about my future with AT&T. Our labor contract expired over the weekend and the union is still in negotiation with the company for a fair contract. Although my department officially closed 1 week ago today, I'm still reporting to work until another position is located for me. I'm still facing termination, but that remains to be seen.

A big "thank you" to our parents who continue to support us. I don't think our family would have fared this well without their help. I also want to send our love to Aunt Nancy as she undergoes chemo treatments this week. John and I love you and pray for a full recovery.

Amy

Two weeks already?!?

Today brings to a close my second week back at work. In some ways, I feel like I wasn't really gone that long but there have been changes at the old workplace, enough that it's noticeable. Still waiting on uniforms and a work van, but it's nice to be out fixing things again. So far as I know, the triplets haven't freaked out that I'm not at home, but they do have Grandma and Grandpa to keep them entertained. Sydney says "Grandma" and "Grandpa" very clearly and points to them, even when they're upstairs in their bedroom. Very sharp, that girl. She also has started trying to sing along with some songs, like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Old MacDonald. Emily gets in on it sometimes, too. They got a set of three sparkly books from their Aunt Nancy and Uncle Danny in Ohio, The Wheels on the Bus, Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush and Old MacDonald Had A Farm. It took a few time hearing Emily or Sydney say (what sounded like) "Yai-yo" before I realized they were saying "E-I-E-I-O" very fast. Noah's speech therapy is starting to kick in, he's trying more words and he wants to be read to as much as the girls now.

I definitely get a kick out of coming home from work and hearing them say "Daddy!" or even "Hi, Daddy!"

As far as the actual work goes, it was like riding a bicycle. On my third day back I was taking calls on my own and fixing fire panels. That's what Simplex was hoping for when they brought me back, and I'm glad I wasn't too rusty.

Diaper Dance???

I have to share this funny story with all. Grandma & Grandpa Cheesman are visiting which allowed John & I to go out last evening on Valentine's Day. We had a scrumptous dinner at Bravo and attended the Cirque Du Soleil show. It was a great day. We left about 4p and got home just before the clock struck midnight.

The babies were upstairs in their nursery for an afternoon nap. Sydney slept while Noah & Emily chattered. After we left the house, my mom decided to bring the non-sleepers downstairs. After reaching the top of the stairs, she smelled a strong odor. She walked in the nursery to find Noah standing butt naked. His pants & diaper where outside the crib while a pile of waste was in his crib. This is the first time a diaper has been removed by the triplets. My parents got more than they bargained for. Mom bathed Noah (1st time), changed his bedding (1st time) and had to clean a few smears off the wall. Afterwards, she feed them, dressed them for bed, brushed their teeth and administers medicine to fight off ear infections. Fortunately, she had some help from my Dad. Now the average person would be exhalsted and ready to turn in for the night. But not my mom, she decided to bake us a cake at midnight.

We are so grateful to have parents that show us so much support. Without their help, I'd go crazy!

Amy

Prayers Please

My life was turned upside down today when it was announced my employment with AT&T will terminate effective March 16, 2009, 5 months shy of my 19th year service anniversary. An estimated 12,000 AT&T employees will lose their jobs by the end of 2009.

As most of you know, John quit his job this past March to become a stay-at-home dad. We were unsuccessful finding childcare, not to mention affordable childcare. I never dreamed I would be facing unemployment. I planned to retire from AT&T in another 20 years or so. I don't know what our future holds. I'm scared, but I know God will provide for my family.

John & I celebrated our 3 year anniversary yesterday, I was notified of employment termination today, and the triplets will be 20 months old tomorrow. He had his hernia repaired at 7a yesterday. He slept most of the day and finally ate some applesauce in the afternoon. He sipped on Pedialyte and ate tons of peas last evening. Although a little fussy, he was a terrific patient. We never heard a peep from him all night and he is his same happy self this morning. He's already bouncing up and down and running from point A to point B.

One of the most amazing parts of his recovery yesterday was the behavior of his sisters. They awoke yesterday morning to his empty crib. When we arrived home from the hospital, they were quiet and concerned acting. His crying resulted in their crying. They knew something was wrong with Noah and were sensitive to him. Sydney kept bestowing kisses on Noah and Emily circled like a mother protecting her child. It's so cute! We haven't captured any of their tender moments on camera or video yet, but we will.

Sydney said "fish" and "feet" today. She is really making fast strides in language. Even so, she will be working with a therapist weekly to help develop her speech.

Emily, like Sydney, is also working on new words and sounds. She's very enthusiastic with "bye, bye and she's mastering "bath". She'll also be working on speech skills with the same therapist.

The girls will be new participants in First Steps, for which Noah has been a client for 6 months. This program works to identify any delays in development and offers the appropriate therapy to ensure children don't fall behind in their first 3 years of life. Noah has excelled with his motor skills in the last 6 months and met all of his goals. He'll be receiving speech therapy going forward. All three barely qualify for speech therapy. We were beginning to worry because none of them were forming words. Now all of a sudden it's begun.

I'm getting really excited for the arrival of October. I love Halloween and the triplets costumes are ready. They're all dressing as bumble bee's. We're taking them to the Picture People to have professional shots taken in their costumes. In addition, they turn 18 months in Oct. so I've got new fall outfits ready for additional pictures. I'd really like to have a photographer take these pictures at a pumkin patch. Not sure about that yet.

Getting ready for Christmas already. I just got their outfits for our family photo. Not the traditional holiday clothes. I picked out clothes they'll get some use out of. Christmas will be lean this year. Living on a single income with a husband and 3 babies is a challenge. We're struggling financially and my overtime at work ended some time back. We just have to conserve where possible. I'm now taking the Indy Metro bus to work. I'm saving alot on gasoline!

In a couple of weeks, Noah is having surgery to repair a groin hernia. Oct. 16th is the date and I'm extremely nervous about the procedure. I've been very emotional about this whole thing and wondering what I'd do if something ever happened to one of my children. I get so frustrated with them sometimes but I love them more than words can express. So much has changed in 18 months. I keep reminding myself how blessed my life is with John, Emily, Noah & Sydney.

Thank goodness for my parents who continue to come monthly and stay for several days. They give John & I the chance to get out alone while they concentrate on their grandchildren. My dad really cracks them up and they love taking walks with my mom (using their new triple stroller).

Well, I've got some laundry to fold (big shock). John's up in Fishers this evening for a night of "Rock Band" with the guys. This is the first time one of us is home alone (at night) with the babies. He didn't leave until some time after they went to bed. All is quiet and I hope it stays that way. Emily's having some sleep issues. I'm beginning to wonder is she's having sleep terrors or something like that. She just wakes very upset and scared sounding. Usually it just requires some patting on her back and standing next to her crib a few minutes to settle her. I'll be hitting the sheets soon myself. I'm tuckered out!

Amy

Vocabulary

It doesn't seem like the time is passing so quickly, and yet it is...

The big news (and the reason for the title) is that The Beans are developing vocabularies. some time ago, I posted that when Noah and Sydney did something for the first time, they'd find a sign posted saying "Emily was here... first" Well, not this time.

They've all been making syllables, the occasional Ma-ma-ma or Ba-ba-ba or Da-da-da. Two weeks ago we got what I considered to be the first "words". Words that expressed something, words that carried meaning for the first time. I needed to run an errand during the day, so I had to get them ready to go and we were going to leave after lunch. They love to get out of the house, either for a car ride or a walk around the neighborhood. They knew that we were going somewhere. They saw the shoes, they saw the diaper bag, they knew. As they were finishing up, I got the washcloth to clean them up. I started with Noah, and when I said "Are you ready to go bye-bye?", he lurched forward, stuck his arms out and said very clearly "Bye-bye!" As I was marvelling at his achievement, Emily was not to be outdone. She put her arms out, too and said "Bye-bye" Sydney was excited to go, too, but didn't say anything at the time.

Way to go, Noah.

They have more tricks in their vocabulary bag than just spoken words, too. We've been working on sign language, with Noah's therapist, some DVDs and practice around the house. First and quickest to pick it up has been Sydney. Their sign language vocabulary is growing very quickly now, too. We started with "more" and "eat". Sydney got those quick and started really paying attention to the DVDs. She knows "hat", "shoes" and more it seems every day. Although Emily and Noah are catching up, Sydney is tops when it comes to sign language.

Way to go, Sydney.

...and then there's Emily. Emily has changed so much in the last few weeks. She has absolutely mastered getting up on furniture. She has mastered stepping down forward without hanging on to anything. She started doing it on the step in the family room and when Amy and I clap and cheer for her, she gets a huge smile and runs back to do it over again. Her hair has been slow to come in, and very fine but in the last few weeks, her hair has begun to fill in and really get some length. It's curling up in the back and it looks so adorable. It's lighter than Sydney's, so Emily is starting out as a blue-eyed blonde. I'm in so much trouble when the boys begin to circle my daughters...

Way to go, Emily.

And hey, Daddy got to add a new word to his vocabulary, too. The word last week was... Gout.
My right foot was sore, then seemed to get better, then within a day got drastically worse. Intense, searing pain centered on the joint just below my big toe. (that knob on the side of your foot) By the time Amy got home from work, I had to go to a medical clinic because the pain was becoming unbearable. I was worried that as it got worse, I would lose the ability to put weight on it and be unable to carry a baby up or downstairs. The diagnosis was gout, and the doctor gave me a prescription for a mega anti-inflammatory and said I should be better in "24-48 hours". Amy took the next day off to take care of things while I was off my feet. I was nervous about that big of a time window, but fortunately relief came on schedule. It also helped greatly that Grandma and Grandpa Cheesman were coming for a visit this past week. They helped me get through the rest of the week caring for the babies. I was also able to get in to my regular doctor's office and got a blood test to confirm the gout diagnosis. That confirmation came in today, and now I'm starting a prescription to reduce the chemical in my blood that causes the gout and hopefully prevent another attack. As bad as the pain was, the silver lining in that very dark cloud was the help and comfort I got from my wife and her parents. It's what family is all about.

Way to go, family.

-John

New pictures added!

My apologies, I didn't realize how far behind I was in uploading pictures. He's a big eater, and I guess we know where it's all going.

Emily is still the tallest, but the others are tracking well for height (I don't have the measurements, but they're all around 2.5 ft tall).

Sydney put on a puzzle solving demonstration for the assessors, landing her at the 18-month level for her cognitive and problem-solving skills. She's officially the one to keep an eye on as far as figuring out how to get into things they're not supposed to...

They didn't rate as high on verbal skills, but Amy and I chalk that up to shyness. Our children tend to clam up around new people, at least at first. At home, I can tell you that Emily and Noah chatter to themselves and each other quite a bit, and Sydney is working out how to express herself as well.

Emily's new nickname is "Emily the Conqueror". She earned that by conquering the furniture in the family room. She can climb up on the couch and the ottoman without any help, and just this morning added the rocking recliner to her list. I looked into the family room while cleaning up the trays from breakfast to find her standing on the seat cushion, facing the chair back and rocking it while she smiled and giggled. Good job, Emily, but there goes the concept of furniture as containment...

Recently, their Grandma and Grandpa Cheesman came to visit for a few days, and the babies loved going out for walks with them! Noah even ended up with a tan line at his ankles where his socks were.

Later this month, Grandma and Grandpa Ayres will return for a visit, their first time seeing them since just after the first birthday. It puts it into perspective to think that when my parents last saw them, they weren't quite yet walking, or chattering as much. They've put on something in the neighborhood of 5 pounds, Emily's hair has filled in and started curling and Noah's had not one, but two haircuts. (He's due for another...)

Sixteen months old today!

-John

3 Busy Bees

Yes, we have 3 busy bees in our home. Noah is turning into a chatter bug, Emily is reaching everything we thought was out of reach, and Sydney, she's more snugly than ever. Most days, they play pretty well together. Oh sure, they take toys away from one another alot! We're still having some biting issues, though less frequent. All 3 have a particular fondness for bopping one another in the head with a shape, block, or anything they can hold. They are definitely understanding the word "NO" when they choose.

All 3 have great appetites. John has started making his own blueberry waffles for their breakfast. He'll whip up a batch that will get them through the week. They continue to gobble up veggies, bananas and yogurt. They are still taking bottles before their breakfast & dinner. I'm sure we'll take the bottle away soon. They drink water from their sippy cups in between.

We took our first family trip to the Indianapolis Zoo a few weeks ago. It went wonderful. John had his doubts. We missed out on several attractions because of the strollers and the crowds were thick. Even so, they got to see the Walrus and Penguins up close. We hope to have a 3rd adult on our next trip so we can see the Dolphins and some of the other animals that were impossible to see from their vantage point. We'll definitely benefit from a family pass when their a little older.

All three are learning some sign language from a great video Noah's therapist uses. John is signing to them alot. We hope this will help us communicate better while they work on their talking skills. They all continue to thrive intellectually and we're always thankful that they continue to be exceptional healthy.

Love,

Amy

On The Mend (some of us)!

The babies are doing well and finishing their antibiotics in the next couple of days. The congestion and coughs are gone. They have their appetites back and feisty as ever!

John and I are still struggling to recover from our sinus infections. It was impossible to get plenty of rest with 3 14-month olds in the house. I stayed home from work the entire week. Thankfully, Grandma & Grandpa Cheesman arrived last Thursday to give us a break. We really appreciate all they do for our family. Dad trimmed all the bushes while mom mowed our lawn.

The babies loved having their grandparents around. There is no doubt that Emily, Noah & Sydney know who Grandma & Grandpa are. Sydney even fetched Grandma's shoes when requested. She is so smart! All 3 have exceptional intelligence.

John and I went to a movie on Saturday & Sunday. Time away was just what the doctor ordered! We always hate to see our parents leave. Their help and support is invaluable. We are looking forward to Grandma & Grandpa Ayres visit in the next couple of months. They are sticking close to home for some much needed rest!

The babies experienced their swing set for the first time. Big smiles down the line! Our time outdoors is limited since the babies bedtime is 7p. We look forward to pleasant weekend weather.

Love,

Amy

Sick, sick, sick, sick & sick!

Let me repeat, sick! Our entire family is under the weather. John and I took the triplets to see their pediatrician this morning. Diagnosis--ear infections (first ever). I then saw my GP this afternoon and got confirmation of a sinus and ear infection. After putting the babies to bed this evening, John visited one of our local Immediate Care Centers and received his sinus infection diagnosis. Can you say, "when it rains, it pours." The last 4 days have been pretty miserable.

This past Saturday, we found ourselves flooded in from excessive rain. We lost electricity for several hours, but were fortunate that our home (in particular basement) didn't suffer any damage. I was a little panicky because we truly couldn't drive away from our home. All streets were flooded and main roads closed. Our nearest major highway, I65, was closed as well. The babies were coughing bad and I was scared we might need medical attention. John called the Johnson County Emergency Services department and verified we would call the Whiteland Fire Dept if we required a rescue. Thankfully, we were able to weather the storm (no pun intended).

Anyway, we are exhausted and medicated. It's time to shut the lights out. Goodnight!

Love,

Amy

Welcome June!

This past week has been busy and fun with my family. We went to 2 cookouts, including one on Memorial Day at my sisters. The babies had lots to experience at Aunt Jenny's. Grandpa Cheesman pulled them in a red wagon and they slid down a slide for the first time. Emily really travels around Aunt Jenny's home. She was even spotted by Grandma Cheesman running down the hall!

We had our first family outing to the Children's Museum on Thursday. Sydney & Noah rode on the carousel but Emily was frightened by the loud music. She'll get another chance when we visit the zoo. While the babies napped in the strollers, John & I had the opportunity to explore the museums newest exhibits honoring Ruby Bridges, Ryan White, and Anne Frank. All were part of a series highlighting those who were victims of racism and prejudice. It's quite emotional but educational. We ended our day in Playscape, a play area for children 5 and under. They enjoyed playing and climbing on the foam mats.

Anyway, all 3 really crack me up. The girls keep chanting "me, me, me" and while playing with Noah yesterday, he laughed like we've never heard before. Kisses (licks) are plenty and they all love being cuddled. Emily is the first to climb furniture. She successfully climbed on top of a storage cube twice, shortly followed but a tumble into the toy box. Oh, she turned the lock on the door to the garage. She's unstoppable! Sydney has great recognition. Just name a specific toy/stuffed animal, and she'll find it. Sydney really is sensitive and enjoys being in our arms. I hope she always displays love and affection like she does now. Noah loves to play rough house with daddy. Specifically, he loves to dive onto & over John. This is what we call "daddy on the floor" time. He's really displaying a bashful side. It's so adorable! This look will always be etched in my mind.

Well, I must sign out for now, but rest assured, I am committed to adding update frequently.

Love,

Amy

Oh, how time flies!

Let me start by saying---WOW (for those of you who don't know, Emily went through a stage of using this expression a lot).

We celebrated the triplets 1st Birthday on April 6th with a Baby Einstein theme. Sydney wore her cake while Emily & Noah were more conservative with theirs. Be sure to check out our photo album for the party pictures.

The Ayres household is buzzing with activity. Emily, Noah & Sydney are all walking and doing a fine job. They love to play a game we call "Where's _____." The babies play by walking behind a big man's recliner in the corner. We'll then ask, "Where's Emily, Noah or Sydney" and they walk out from behind the chair. It's very entertaining.

We graduated to Vitamin D milk and table food exclusively with their 1st birthday. They have great appetites and do a really good job eating with their fingers! Some of their favorites include bananas, yogurt and lima beans. Noah would eat forever if you let him. He tends to cry in protest to having his hands & face cleaned off. This signals the end of meal/snack time and he doesn't like it.

As most of you know, John is a full time stay-at-home dad. His new job started April 7, 2008. He is doing a fabulous job keeping them on a sleeping/eating/playing schedule. They are learning so much from him and Baby Einstein. Right now, we are working on recognizing body parts (eyes, ears, mouth, nose and toes). Oh, and John is teaching them to hi-five. It's so cute!

They are all growing mischievous. The girls recently discovered the top drawer of their chest and emptied out the socks. Daddy has now added safety latches so we don't have to clean up after each nap. Noah's working on his biceps by doing pull ups at the pack-n-play, safety gate and kitchen table. He's so strong!

At last check, Emily weighed 19 lbs, Noah 18 lbs 8 oz and Sydney 18 lbs 4 oz. All three are hitting their milestones and thriving as expected. We are so thankful to have healthy, happy and loving children. They are very affectionate and love one-on-one time with us.

Next week, we plan to visit the Indianapolis Zoo and the Indianapolis Children's Museum. We'll post pictures soon so please check back.

Love to All,

Amy

Growing, growing, growing!

Here are the pediatrician updates I promised. Sydney weighs 17 lb 6 oz, Noah weighs 17 lb 6-1/2 oz, and Emily weighs 17 lb 10 oz. Over the last several months, Noah has really overcome the reflux he suffered from. Since he is doing so well, we have officially stopped all meds for his symptoms. No more Prilosec or Zantac. We are thrilled! I was afraid he would experience withdraws since he really like taking his medicine. If he misses them, we don't know it! Our pediatrician has given us the ok to stop offering formula once they turn 1 year of age. Instead, we'll switch to Vitamin D milk. What a huge savings that will be.

Emily is officially on the move. She started crawling in the last week and is now pulling herself up! When I called home today to check on the babies, my mom said "Emily thinks she's hot stuff" moving about. She is really keeping my parents on their toes! Oh, she's already bumped her head a couple of times today. Grandma & Grandpa Ayres have a lot to look forward to when they arrive on Sunday.

Sydney just started saying Ma, Ma yesterday. John called me at work so I could hear her chanting them over and over. Of course when I got home, she didn't have anything to say to me.

Like Emily, Sydney and Noah are getting on their knees. I don't think it'll be long before they become the engines, not the caboose!

Noah is a character. He smiles so much and giggles at some the silliest things. For example, I sing a bit from a rap song that really gets a big response. Noah is our most eager baby food eater. He generally has 2 jars daily compared to 1 for each of the girls. Noah feels the faster you shovel it in the better. He really does take after me!

All three are doing terrific (outside of some recent nighttime sleep issues). John and I are preparing for his new job...stay at home dad, which will officially start the end of March. The grandparents will continue to help out as long as they are needed, for which we are thankful!

Well, my lunch hour is ending so I must get back to work. Please keep checking back for updates.

Amy

9 Months Old

Yes, you read correctly. Emily, Noah & Sydney are 9 months old today. Although the first couple of months seemed to crawl, the recent months are flying by. I'm already starting to plan for their 1st birthday party. We already have their personalized bibs for the occassion.

The little stinkers personalities are in full force. Emily has decided to skip a nap or 2 each day. Instead of 3 naps daily, she sometimes only takes 1. As the Eddie Murphy song goes "my girl loves to party all the time, party all the time, party all the time!" She is rocking on her hands and knees so it shouldn't be long until she starts crawling. Noah started babbling on Christmas day like Emily. Lots of ba, ba's. He still has no teeth but still packs quite a bite! He loves to make noise and smile. He's especially amused by my yawns! Like Emily, Sydney is beginning to get on all fours. I don't think she'll be far behind her sister. Sydney is our most sensitive. Leaving her sight will result in a cry. She's so attached!

We took some snapshots yesterday in hopes of capturing a photo to submit in the Regis & Kelly Most Beautiful Baby Contest. Of course the pictures are cute, but we weren't successful getting smiles all around. You just can't imagine what a challenge that is. I'm hoping the Ayres triplets will be chosen. If they are not, I still think they are the most beautiful.

I will post updated weights/heights next week after their pediatrician appointment. Later this month, we'll visit St Francis Hospital for their Developmental Clinic where they are assessed by various therapist. This will be our 2nd assessment since the triplets were born 5 weeks premature. We passed with flying colors in July. I'm sure we'll have the same great results.

Time for bed. Got to be up @4:30a. Hoping no wild babies tonight. All 3 got up this am between 3a-5a. Not typical--thank God!

Amy

P.S. Emily says "Da, Da"

First Christmas past...

We survived!

What were we thinking?!? Christmas dinner in our house? Four grandparents, three newborns, a sister and an uncle? While not complete pandemonium, it was intensely busy. Mom helped me get a turkey prepped for the oven, Dad helped here and there getting things ready. The beans were so very cooperative, napping well and not reacting too negatively to the upheaval of their familiar surroundings. Furniture was rearranged, there were more people in the house than they'd ever seen and they took it all in stride. Noah even took the opportunity to show off the vocal abilities he's been concealing from us. he decided Christmas was the day to reveal that he could chatter as well as big sis. Sydney is still having attachment issues (don't walk away from her!), but she dealt pretty well all day being passed from parent to grandparent and back.

They all got to try Christmas dinner thanks to a baby food grinder we got at the shower. Noah was not a fan of turkey, mashed potatoes and green beans... Sydney and Emily seemed to do OK with it.

I've uploaded some of the new pictures, but I'm really tired and I'm going to bed now. I'll finish up the red-eye reduction on the last group and get them added soon.

Oh, and Sydney *FINALLY* pushed out her second tooth!!! Maybe that's why she was fussy last night between 2:30 and 3:30... Anyway, like I said, really tired and I'm going to bed.

Goodnight all, thank you to those who sent things for the beans or for us. We have books to read to them, toys for them to play with (and us, too!), new clothes for them... Just so much stuff! We are not only blessed with our wonderful children but with kind and generous families who help and support us as we get through this.

-John

It all happens so fast...

I know my sibs, my friends, my extended family by blood or heart that have experienced new parenthood stand by and watch with what must be the quiet amusement of someone who knows how the story goes but they don't want to spoil it for me. I make what posts I can (or just upload another batch of pictures trying to keep up with what my wife posts...), marvelling at my amazing children, boasting of their accomplishments and all the while, you know this. You've been there. Our parents, without whose help I don't know how we could have made it this far, are still teaching us. Showing us how to do things, how to respond to them, maybe at some level we're seeing how *we* were cared for before we were old enough to remember it.

Amy did SO much work getting Christmas cards together, getting prints ready to tuck them into the envelopes... I had one simple little job, print up labels for the backs of the pictures... I apologize now to my youngest daughter for goofing up a batch and spelling her name incorrectly. Sorry Syn... oops! Sydney!

Sydney's been a little moody lately, we think she's about to push her second tooth out into the world. Poor girl... She's changed so much in the last few weeks, visibly putting on weight. Her cheeks are so round now when she throws her little pout.

Emily's proud pair of bottom choppers are all she has at the moment, but she loves to show them off whether it's a huge smile for whoever she's looking at or during her vocal practices. She's stringing more syllables together all the time. Her latest achievement, however, is so much fun to watch. She sits up unsupported on the floor and plays. Her wobbles are decreasing and she catches herself more often than not.

Sydney and Noah can sit up for brief stints, but they haven't quite got the balancing right and they'll tip over pretty easily.

Noah is an absolute eating machine. He knows the schedule, and he does NOT like to eat late. He still gets the Sensitive Formula and the daily doses of Zantac and Prilosec, but he hasn't had any major reflux problems for a while. His biggest problem with his baby food is if the person with the spoon is moving too slow.

They nap well (most days), they eat well (most days), they're no too fussy (most days... seeing a pattern?)... I say it a lot to most people who ask about them, but they are absolutely three individual little people. Noah and Sydney love to play together, Emily loves to be the center of attention (sometimes pushing one of her sibs away from the center, but we have time to work on that...).

I can't describe what it feels like to have a little face light up when it looks at you, let alone two or three little faces. They hug us, they kiss us (watch out for Noah, he'll slobber all over you), they respond to their names. They love to look at the Christmas tree when it's all lit up, they love the ornaments that have little bells.

This may be the best Christmas ever.

-John

First Photo With Santa

Santa was a hit with Emily, Noah & Sydney. He looked so authentic with his real beard and chubby cheeks. All 3 sat on his lap for individual photos and then we had a group shot taken with all three. They all smiled and Sydney even cuddled with Santa. I wish you all could have witnessed that moment. She snuggled against his beard and stared into his eyes. We decided to purchase CD's of the pictures so we can send copies to our families and friends.

I forgot to mention that Sydney now has 1 tooth and another one starting to come in. Noah is now rolling and is doing well sitting on his own. All three can sit up unassisted, but not for long. We just need some more practice

We have some new snapshots to share. First, the babies looked so cute. The photographer, Mary, commented several times on how pleasureable they were to work with. All three were so happy and smiley! No fussing at all! It was a great experience for all of us. Look for a photo soon. Afterwards, we visited a gal who John formerly worked with. She was smitten. This was her second time seeing the triplets. On our way home from downtown Indy, we stopped at Olive Garden for lunch. We were the main attraction.

Tommorow morning we are headed to the Indianapolis Children's Museum for a visit with Santa. The event is for infants up to 24 months. Emily, Noah & Sydney will be wearing their "Baby's 1st Christmas" outfits for the occasion. I hope they'll be happy about the bearded, jolly Santa.

Gotta go, it's time for bottles & bed.

Lots of Love,

Amy & family

Sydney Rolls

Yeah, Sydney has now joined her sister in rolling over. Well, more than a little!

Let me start by saying "yikes"! Life is sure hectic for this Ayres family. While John and I are working fulltime outside of the home, our parents are working fulltime in our home. The grandparents are taking exceptional care of Emily, Noah and Sydney. The babies are healthy and very happy. Most of the time, Emily and Noah have huge smiles on their faces. Sydney is more conservative with her smiles. She has such an Angelic face and has her Daddy wrapped around her finger (not her thumb--it's reserved for sucking). Yes, that's right, Sydney has begun sucking her thumb. It's so adoreable! Emily has mastered rolling from back to tummy and vice versa. Noah (my Hey Goodlookin') can sure make noise. His squeals are sure to crack our mirrors. They certainly have individual personalities and can sure crack us up!

We visited the pediatrician today for their 6 month well child visit. All 3 are sure growing. Noah weighs 14lb, 11oz; Sydney weighs 15lb, 2oz; Emily weighs 15lb, 15oz. The received their 6 month vaccinations and behaved like trooopers. Noah still has some reflux issues, but they have definitely improved since starting Zantac & Priloac. All 3 are eating baby food once daily. We alternate veggies and fruits.

We'll try to add new pictures to the album this weekend. I must stop typing now. I'm falling asleep!

Amy

...and that's when he noticed that a month had gone by...

I know, I know... I don't know how many people I've told on the phone "I'll try to get something posted in the next couple days..." I know how many people have checked faithfully, hoping for news, updates and yes, NEW PICTURES! (Hint: They went up first)

Life has a way of recalibrating your schedule when there are three babies in play.

To put this as delicately as possible, there's a condition that occasionally occurs in women after their child(ren) have arrived. It happened here and it's being treated. That's all I'll say, out of respect for the situation, other than to say everyone in the house is fine.

HUGE thanks must go out to the grandparents! My parents at first and until they return, Amy's parents. They are holding down the fort and caring for the babies while we go to work. I don't like to think how much more complicated our lives would've become without the amazing help and support of our parents, stepping in to see to it that their newest grandbabies are cared for in their own home by their own family. Our children are surrounded by love all the time, and what could be better for them than that?

Speaking of the children:

EMILY-

In her recent photos, that I noticed while uploading them today, her appearance has changed so much lately! She's putting on weight, as evidenced by the double chin, chubby arms and legs, and those big cheeks! At her last Dr. appointment a few weeks ago, she was 7 lb 8 oz, still the biggest. She is most likely well over 8 lb now, possibly even 9lb! She is noticeably heavier to me when I pick her up. She will still howl the loudest and the hardest when she feels it necessary (like bath time), but she can also be so quiet and sweet and wide-eyed and curious. She is beginning to take note of her surroundings and interact with them a little here and there.

NOAH-

Noah is filling out nicely, but he still needs to take as much of his bottle as we can get into him. That has been complicated lately by some acid reflux problems, causing him to burp crud into his throat (very painful from the cries he makes) and/or spit up. His doctor has put him on Zantac for it, and it's been getting better but we're not out of the woods yet. A quarter teaspoon of Mylanta helps soothe him when he's in pain after feeding from time to time. He was 7 lb 3 oz the last time we checked, and I hope he's gaining well. I must say I worry about him most now.

SYDNEY-

Poor Sydney... Being third in line has taught her patience so far, since she usually has to wait for whoever fed Emily to get her finished up before starting on Sydney. She will squawk at you in her very distinctive yelping cry, but it's not the roaring howl of Emily or the pained screech of Noah. She may not wait quietly all the time, but she will wait... and we appreciate it so much. She still crosses her eyes, most times now with her tongue hanging out for good measure. She is an entertainer. She was 7 lb 2 oz at last check, so it's officially a battle for second place between her and Noah.

It's very late, and I have more to go through, but I'll close this for now. I promise I won't make you wait another month for another update!

-John

New pictures are up!

First baths, the nursery, nice group shots and some stroller action, too!

Week 4: Is Daddy slipping?

I know, I know... I'm taking too long with the updates.

There are pictures to be added, all three have had their first baths (Noah jumped ahead in line due to his tendency to... um... spray). All three did well, although Emily was the fussiest of the bunch. Noah and Sydney sailed through the experience like it was no big deal, unless you consider them relieving themselves in the tub an editorial on bathing...

Emily... Oh, Emily. For someone who started out with breathing issues, she has taken her lung development seriously since coming home. She cries louder and harder than the other two by far. If we're lucky, a pacifier and some gentle stroking of her head combined with soothing talk will calm her. If... we... are... lucky... Once you get her calmed down, she appears to be almost angelic. She'll cuddle up against you, smile at you, make happy little noises and so on... until you try to put her down.

Noah is a sound effects machine in a diaper. He makes the most interesting array of grunts and noises on a regular basis. It's unusual for him to be quiet, although most of the time, he's not crying much. He is still quite the escape artist, escaping his swaddling blanket with astonishing ease. Before you're done wrapping him, he's likely to have a few fingers-- if not an entire hand-- out and moving around. He tries to grab his pacifier to hold onto it, but most often sends it flying.

Sydney is not always quiet, but her cries are more like squawks. She doesn't get wound up and howl like Emily or turn red and scream like Noah, but she gets decent volume and can get her point across fairly well. Other than that, you can just hold her and watch the show. She makes so many faces combined with her crossed eyes, she's just pure entertainment.

They're a couple weeks away from their next Dr. appointment, but we're reasonably sure they're all above 5 lbs. Their Mommy has already begun phasing out the "preemie" size clothing as it fits a little too snugly now. They're growing out of things! It's wonderful and exciting right now, although I'm sure I'll be less thrilled with them growing out of things as they get older.

We got our first package from the makers of Similac today! We filled out information cards at the hospital and again at the Dr.'s office and they are sending us formula for the beans! We are very thankful for any breaks we can get on expenses, and formula will be a big one.

The biggest news in the past week by far has to do with childcare for the beans, especially as Amy's maternity leave draws to a close. Amy and I happily accepted the offer from my parents to stay with us long-term and help us care for them so we wouldn't hire a stranger (nanny or au pair) or send them to a daycare center (didn't appeal to us anyway). The third option would have involved me resigning from my job and becoming a stay-at-home Dad. Thankfully, between my parents and Amy's family coming down from Muncie to help, we should have it covered at least until the end of the year. it's a huge help and we can't thank them enough. The support we have gotten from our family continues to demonstrate to us why it's important to have families.

-John

P.S. The beans send their thanks to Aunt Cecilia for their perfectly matched clock in the nursery and the rain gear she has sent them.

----
To the SSPOM visitor who brought some food and a cake, thank you, we can't wait to try it!

Day... Oh to heck with it... Three WEEKS of the beans!

No, nothing is wrong, other than severe sleep deprivation.

Now don't get me wrong, we LOVE the beans, but could they sleep... just a little? Please?

Big sister Emily appears to be developing colic. Several nights of heart-breaking cries from her and some phone calls to the pediatrician's office, internet research (well, I *am* the house geek...) and even some old-school things called "books" were consulted. Pretty much nothing we can do except try to comfort her and ride it out. Poor thing sounds so awful crying, it's just heart-breaking to hear.

Noah seems to be growing like a weed. He looks like he's filling out his skin much better and looking less like a shar-pei dog. And the lungs on that boy! When he wants to eat, he will let you know at top volume.

Sydney's blocked tear duct looks much better now, she isn't waking up with her eyelids all but glued shut, and that's such an improvement for her! She is still sweet and quiet (mostly), and thankfully she usually goes right to sleep giving us time to focus on the other two who like to stay awake and fuss. Sydney got her very first bath tonight, Complete with grandparents, video camera, snapshots, the whole media event. She got through it with no fussing, no crying, just took it all in stride. Thank you Sydney for making that first bath so easy! As soon as Daddy gets your pictures sorted through, he'll add them to what was uploaded tonight.

I'm sorry it took a while to get to this, but with everything going on around here, it gets tough to make time to sit at a computer doing this instead of helping out with the babies. At least this time I didn't fall asleep on it...

-John

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ayrestriplets.blogspot.com/2007/04/day-oh-to-heck-with-it-three-weeks-of.html' title='Day... (16)

Hey John, what happened to Friday night's post?

Well, you see, when tired Daddy tries to multi-task by posting from bed right before he goes to sleep... Sometimes it just doesn't quite work out and sleep wins.

Friday was a very big day for the beans, too. Their first ride all together in the back of the SUV. Their first pediatrician visit. Their first trip to Babies R Us. They got a lot done Friday.

Dr. Fox is wonderful, I hadn't met her, but Amy met with her before choosing her. She's very nice and has a very good way with the babies. She's very impressed by their progress so far, too.

Emily is weighing in at 5lb 4oz, and has been self-pacing her feeding very well. But Daddy still nervously watches her face while she eats to make sure she doesn't turn any funny colors on him.

Noah is just shy of the 5lb goal (for the nice car seats) at 4lb 14oz. Of course, that was two days ago, he might be over 5lb by now. He is eating very well. Not always sleeping very well, but he does eat.

Sydney is close to her big sister at 5lb 2oz, but she's eating like she wants to top it. The doctor said she can go on the same formula as her siblings, which makes our life easier as we only need mix one pitcher versus two now.

Saturday, the beans made their first tour of the neighborhood. Mommy and Daddy strapped them into the seats and snapped them in place on the strollers (a double and a single) and took them out. The canopies shaded them nicely (we don't need Noah getting any redder than he already is...) and even though Sydney complained VERY loudly at first, by the end of the driveway, she had quieted down and they slept for most of the trip. They attracted some attention, but not too much. I guess we'll have to get used to being something of a spectacle.

Saturday night, Daddy was up until 3-ish trying to calm Noah down. Mommy came down and relieved me and I went up to sleep for a good stretch before coming down and letting her go up to rest. Grandma Ayres was a big help with the Cheesman/Johnson contingent back in Muncie for a couple days. We sort of drifted through Sunday but were paid a nice visit by friends Melissa and her boyfriend Greg. They're moving North soon and wanted to see the babies and visit before they left. Good luck on the new jobs, Mel and Greg! Good luck with all of it! Thanks for the very nice candies, they are popular with the caretakers of the beans.

So here it is, Sunday night, I'm catching up on this while Grandma and Grandpa Cheesman feed the beans upstairs. (Thanks for coming back!) I'll close here because I need to get some sleep before the 5:30/6:00/6:30 AM feedings and then off to work for me.

The beans are very active these days. They stretch and flex their limbs, they're raising their heads more (especially when you're trying to burp them... hold still!) and generally showing a lot of interest in their surroundings. They have each had a turn now on their swing and they seem to like it very well. It kept them quiet enough that we might need another one of those things... Maybe two...

-John

More pics coming tomorrow!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ayrestriplets.blogspot.com/2007/04/day-um-what-is-it-now.html' title='Day um... what is it now? We have the full set!

Except for a short trip to meet with the Southside Parents of Multiples for the first time (but not the last...), we devoted our evening to getting a feel for the feeding rotation with a third player.

I just don't have words to adequately express what I felt to see all three of my children, in our home, no tubes/wires/monitors... Us getting used to them, them getting used to us... Emily and Sydney sharing a nap in a pack-n-play... the first time they were all asleep at the same time, like they are now... It's this kind of emotion that sustains me through the fear and doubt.

Looking forward to the networking that the SSPOM will provide. Already saw a couple friendly faces and Amy and I were recognized from the pictures on this blog. We met some very nice people who were very warm and welcoming (will I always be the only guy there???). Amy and I both have a sister that carried twins, both sets naturally-occurring. My sister strongly suggested we look into an organization like SSPOM, so here we are.

I need sleep now.

-John

Day 12: Almost home

Yay Emily! She's doing great and looks like everything is on track for her to finally join her sibs in keeping her parents busy.

We visited her for what we hope is the last time in the NICU tonight. She ate well, got a new outfit and nodded off to sleep.

Since I know the NICU nurses will read this, let me express again what I said early on. Our three children were initially cared for by a wonderful staff of truly professional people who define the term "caregivers". They could not have been more helpful or patient with two new parents who were struggling to figure out how to suddenly care for three tiny little babies. I remember thinking how small and fragile they looked and being more than a little afraid of accidentally doing something wrong or inadvertently hurting them. They got us past the initial fears and worries, told us it'd be OK and helped us do as much as we could to care for them. I know they will miss having the Ayres triplets around to care for, but it looked tonight like they had plenty to keep them busy. I'm glad they had some time with our children, I know Amy and I appreciate everything they did for us and the beans.

When we got home from the NICU we decided to stay up for Noah and Sydney's midnight feeding. Now that they're taken care of, Amy and I are going to sleep and wait impatiently for the time tomorrow when we can bring our first-born home at last.

...now the fun *really* begins...

-John

Day 11: Where did Day 10 go?

It'll come as no surprise to those who already have children, but I can't stop myself from saying "Wow, kids are a lot of work!"

I know... "Duh!"

Two at once may not be fully twice the work, but there's no volume discount. Emily isn't even here yet!

Emily update: She's still in the NICU. She had a "desat" (her oxygen level dropped below the happy number) the other night during a feeding and the neonatologist wanted to keep her a bit longer just to be sure she's stable and to give me and Amy some time to learn how to pace her feeding. We have to stop her from pulling too much on the bottle, lest she "forget to breathe". I tried it for the first time today, and I was surprised at the GRIP she had on that nipple in her mouth! If she has no further incidents, she could be ready to come home on Thursday. Another option is to send her home with a monitor which we'd prefer not to do, especially since it won't be used during feeding, only while she's sleeping. To be a parent is to worry. Triplets, 4 weeks premature and one has potential breathing problems... It's getting to be an awfully big stack. Our firstborn looks good, she's gaining weight, and there's a chance she might crack the 5 lb mark by Thursday! (4lb, 14oz today) It was so hard for Amy and me to leave her there when we had our hearts set on taking her home, but if the experts say they want to keep an eye on her, it's very hard to disagree with them. We've done so well and come so far. Hang in there Emily! We're coming for you!

Noah and Sydney update: They do so much! Wriggle, twist, flail their little arms and legs, shake their heads back and forth, and that's just when we try to feed them! Noah is becoming less terrified of diaper changes, so I hope that means his pain is subsiding some. A good portion of the time I would've used to post last night was probably spent staring down at a child in my arms. Sleeping, feeding or just holding them and looking at the expressions they make up at me. I could do it for hours... Not sure what their weights are, but I can tell you they *are* gaining weight. They are filling out and looking healthier by the day. Noah's very red skin tone is fading down to a more normal shade. Sydney's very narrow face is rounding out and she is resembling her sister more and more. We may yet have trouble telling them apart!

Yesterday Amy's mother and sister came down to stay a few days and help. Added to my mother up from Texas for an extended stay, the workload is at least manageable. This is when the importance of family shows through. Amy and I going through this alone would've been all but impossible! Thankfully, we don't have to worry about that. We have family. We are family. Emily, Noah and Sydney will know how important family has been in getting them into this world and caring for them when they needed it most. Amy and I will make sure they know. We can never thank our family members enough for their help. And the family members too far away to help in person, you are not left out of this. We were supported long before the beans arrived by gestures of support, care packages, caring phone calls and too many other things to count. Amy's family helped us move into this nice new house. We couldn't have done any of this without family.

It's almost time for me to wrap this up. I ran a little long, but I needed to make up for yesterday. I'll work on getting the latest pics posted as soon as I can, we have some shots of Noah and Sydney coming home, adjusting to their new surroundings and a couple from today of Emily in a nice change of clothes after her feeding.

-John

Day 9: Stress testing

We have survived the first night. Amy and I handled the middle of the night feedings/diaperings, and were thankfully relieved at 7 AM by the grandparents. So very thankful they're here to help us!

Poor Noah is having pain from his procedure yesterday, and he's reminded of it at every diaper change. It is a heart-wrenching sound, his pain cry. I know it too well now. I think it hurts Amy just as much to hear it as it does him feeling it. Hang in there, son. (no pun intended)

Sydney had some pretty bad congestion so Daddy had to come after her with the dreaded bulb. She HATES that thing! She didn't start off feeding very well, either.

Come morning, several clothes-changes for Noah and the blanket from our bed in the laundry from one well-aimed formula launch by Noah, we're OK, I think. They're back up to feeding at good levels, they're sleeping well between feedings, Noah's even a little less uncomfortable at diaper changes.

Amy slept less than I did, so I'm trying to get her to rest some today, but we also want to go visit Emily. As much work as it's going to add having her here, we want her home. If she stays on track, she'll be coming home on Tuesday.

They are all above their birth weights, Noah at 4lbs 7oz, and the girls both at 4lbs 10oz. When we went to visit at 6:00 she was missing her cannula! Hopefully it doesn't need to go back on, but they're going to see how she does tonight and go from there. Keep up the good work, Emily!

Not to be outdone, Noah and Sydney BOTH have been moved out of the warmers and into regular cribs!

I'll have to double check the exact numbers, but all three beans are at or a little above their birth weights!

If Emily does well with her cannula out, she'll "graduate" to a regular crib as well!

At this rate (I hate to jinx it, but...), it could be a very different house we live in next weekend! One with three children sleeping in the nursery, and two parents... not sleeping at all.

Also loaded to the photo album is a new picture of Noah and Sydney's new sleeping quarters. They were in them when we arrived, snoozing like they always do, not a care in the world.

Diaper changing took on a whole new dynamic, too. Holding Noah and then... "you smell something?" He loaded one up for me... Yeesh! And it had a distinctly unpleasant odor to it. But he loaded one up even bigger for Mommy not 20 minutes later. So who am I to complain?
Two loaded diapers in less than a half hour? Please tell me it doesn't go that fast all the time...

Please?

-John

Day 6: All about focus

A short post for a long day.

I got to drop off some Mommy juice for the beans this morning so I got to see them first today. Noah and surprisingly, Sydney were awake and exploring their incubators. I reached in and stroked their little heads, said good morning and went on about my work day. If the feeling I get from just that little bit of contact was available as a drug, I'm sure it would be illegal.

I was also mightily pleased with the news the nurse gave me about Emily. No "incidents" overnight! Way to go Emily!

It was nice to see Noah and Sydney just laying there, looking around, not fussing. All is right with the world.

*****

After dinner, Amy and I went to spend some together time with the beans. We each got to spend a good amount of time with each of them, feeding them, changing their clothes, talking to them, just holding them and feeling s-o-o-o-o-o relaxed.

Emily is getting down very low on the air in her cannula, and the nurse thinks she *may* be off it soon if she continues to have no incidents. Attagirl!

Noah didn't slow down until he was 10ccs past his goal. That kid eats like a horse! (OK, a tiny horse, but a horse nonetheless)

And what do you call a bean without a stem? SYDNEY! She has shed her cord, and by shed, I mean she swung her arm during a diaper change and knocked it clean off. Let's hear it for our first cordless bean!

So we have Emily, focused on her breathing, Noah, focused on his eating, and Sydney, focused on getting rid of her cord. Not bad for their sixth day.

Tomorrow is going to be a big day for the beans. For the first time they get to meet Grandma and Grandpa Cheesman, up close and personal! Expect pictures and a healthy post!

-John

Once again, Daddy was very thorough with today's update. As he mentioned, leaving the babies behind was hard. I was bawling before exiting the hospital. A complete stranger stopped to offer me help. I just crumbled as I told our story (John just told me she was a hospital chaplain). She gave me some comforting words and even shared her own experience with a preemie child. Anyway, John came out and all was ok again. We both agreed that leaving Emily, Noah & Sydney behind was best for their own well being.

Anyway, tonight's visit was special. Words can't express how I felt when John and I held all 3 at the same time-WOW! To those who have left me messages over the past several days, please forgive me for not returning your calls. Life as I once knew it is long gone. I LOVE YOU GUYS--Rita, Heather & Lisa!

Sorry to cut this short but I need to pump & finish watching Monday night's episode of 24. We went home this afternoon without any of our new babies. It was so much harder for me than I thought, and I knew it was going to be VERY hard for Amy. We got through leaving the parking lot and getting on the road home. OK, the tough part's over, now on to the good stuff!

The beans have learned about something new on Day 5... CLOTHING!
(New pictures are up for those who just can't wait)

One of the things I used to help cheer Amy up on the ride home was that she had a chance to pick out some outfits for new pictures. It worked pretty well.

Emily still has a few things to work on. The last day or so they've been working down the air coming in through the cannula. She still had two "incidents" last night where her O2 sat level dropped too low. She's gotten a new, slightly larger cannula and we start over. The LPN who examined her thinks it's possible she is experiencing some reflux (not unusual for preemies) that could be complicated her breathing. That might lead to her getting her feeding tube put back in until they get it back under control. Poor baby girl! I know how much she hates that. No temperature issues for her, at least.

Noah is picking up momentum. He is very happy to have all the unpleasant sticky tape holding tubes and Velcro to his little head long gone. He's becoming so interested in his surroundings, looking around, watching, listening. Almost distracting enough to get his attention off his bottle... *almost*. He's becoming quite popular with the nurses. (That's my boy!)

Sydney has also had all of her various tubes and tapes removed and she just gets prettier every time I look at her. I know I've mentioned her crossed eyes before, and she still does it. She's too adorable for words.

One of the NICU LPNs (the one who spoke to Amy right before the C-section) spoke to us about the beans today, detailing what we're doing about Emily's troubles and she also mentioned that the next step for Noah and Sydney will be weaning them off of the incubators into regular cribs. If they do well with that, then they will be coming home! We'll know it's almost time when they request their car seats to start putting them in a little at a time to get used to them. I can't wait, and I know Amy would love to have them here!

Amy has started getting results from her pumping and hopefully as that is added to their feedings they'll really start to pick up on their progress, especially little Emily. We went back this evening after a quick nap for Amy and a pumping session. Since Emily had already started feeding when we got their, Noah and Sydney got the breast milk added to their feeds. Emily will get some with her next feeding. The beans also met some new people tonight, Grandparents! My parents came for a visit during the feeding time and got to spend some time holding Emily and Noah while Daddy fed Sydney. Emily nodded off to sleep in her Grandfather's care after a bit while Noah fussed at his Grandmother just a little before settling down and going to sleep. Before that, the beans were dressed in new clothes and took pictures sitting together in Mommy's lap and Daddy's lap until Sydney demanded to be fed.

I know this post is getting long, but I just have a couple more bits to go...

After the above-mentioned visit, Amy went to a room they have at the NICU for pumping to try to get some more for the beans. She was successful, and after 45 minutes we were ready to drop off what we had with the nurses and go home. When we went in, one of the nurses looked up and said "You caught him!" It seems Noah had woken up midway through his nap and took another half-feeding worth of formula before he would quiet back down. We found him napping quietly in her arms. (again, that's my boy!)

Tomorrow I face my own hurdle to get over. I'm going back to work after what seems like such a long time, but has really only been five days. As hard as it is for Amy to leave her babies in a hospital it's a double whammy for me. My babies are in the hospital and my wife is at home and I can't help any of them. It's so humbling becoming a father and learning that no matter how small your babies are, they are so much bigger than anything you thought was important before they got here.

I need some ice cream now.

-John

Day 4: Tuesday Evening.

First things first: I'm very happy to hear how popular this has become. It has proven to be more valuable than I thought. I got a call today from Scott and Kris Bass (Scott was one of my groomsmen at the wedding). His job has taken him and his family to live in Germany but when they called to check on us today, I was able to give him the website address and they could see for themselves instantly. The Ayres Triplets are now an international sensation!

Second, since I hear from Jenny that she makes a bee-line for the photo album, I added a link to it on the left there so it'll be easy to get to, no scrolling down to find the post where I added the link the first time.

In local news, Amy was released from the hospital today. St. Francis Hospital has an on-site Inn that we were given a complimentary night's stay in, so we're here until tomorrow. I know I'll miss being this close to the beans, and I hope she'll be OK going home tomorrow without them. She is doing just great in her recovery and is already planning out her visiting times until they are all home with us.

Now on to the kids!

Emily is still being slowly weaned off the cannula. She's feeding well and otherwise progressing beautifully. She's all about forward progress, and her face is getting rounder by the day. her skin is a very fair pink and she has now had her temp sensor removed. She has a tendency to gulp at her bottles, but she's taking at least as much as they want her to get, if not a little more. She no longer has a little feeding tube taped to her face anymore.

Noah had his IV pulled today as well as his temp sensor and feeding tube. His face is filling out some and his nurses tend to load his bottle with as much as 10cc's extra, and most of the time he takes it. He still likes to be wrapped up and held close after his feeding and he'll doze off on your shoulder or in your arms.

Sydney is taking her time feeding. She is off her IV and temp sensor, but she still has a feeding tube because she doesn't always take all the formula they give her. Other than that, she'll happily give you a goofy cross-eyed glance, and nod off in almost any position you hold her in.

Best part of today, other than getting my wife back safely and taking her out for a celebratory lunch at On The Border ( we got a free dessert!), was taking pictures with the beans this morning. Those of you who headed straight to the photo album know this already, but we had the nurses line them up side by side in one bed for group photos. This is the closest they've been to each other in 4 days. Happily, no fights broke out. Head over to the photo album and check them out!

-John

This is my first opportunity to look at what John has been working on. We don't know if she's gotten it from Mommy, Daddy or her namesake, Great Grandmother Emily. There's no path that will really make it any easier on us... Oh well, good thing she's cute. And as far as poor coordination, well... She's in an incubator now with only four holes in it. This afternoon she found the only open hole and heaved her pacifier out onto the floor... TWICE. She was due for a bottle, coincidence??? I think not.

Noah it seems, has heard and understood that he's been called the "runt", "smallest" and so on. He knows he needs his bottles to get going and growing so when he wakes up, it's time to eat... NOW. He starts making noise and he'll quiet down if you come to him and start to interact with him, within reason. The nurses have a routine where they check temperature, diaper and listen to their bellies before they get their feeding. Noah will give you a minute to do what you have to do, but if he's not moving out of the incubator into feeding position, you'll hear from him. As soon as the bottle gets into his mouth, all is quiet. The nurses have taken to putting extra formula in his bottle because he's power-sucking his bottles.

Sydney had Daddy going with the sweet little angel act. She's quiet and sweet... and scheming. She's not a fan of the tube they're still using to check their bellies and push any formula they don't finish from the bottles into them directly. The tube is taped to her face and she's constantly tugging at it, trying to get it out. Now I hate to accuse my daughter, but I swear the last time I fed her she would open her eyes just a tiny bit to see if Daddy was watching and then her little hand would come snaking out of the blanket and grab the tube! "No, no Sydney, you still need that", I would say and tuck her hand back in and reach to pick the bottle up and there goes her little hand again! Then she opens her eyes wide and looks at me all cross-eyed and I chuckle a little and she goes back to tugging at her tube. What a will on that little girl! Last time Mommy tried to feed her, Sydney wanted nothing to do with the bottle, she just wanted to be held by Mommy. The nurse had to take her and get her finished up in time for shift change.

************

Right now Amy is resting and I wanted to post another update to this since now I know that it's quickly becoming a popular means of checking up on the beans for all concerned about them. Thank you for all the love and support we've gotten from you all, we feel it and we tell the beans all about the big family they have waiting to meet them. I can't wait to get them healthy, get them home and get them on their way in this world.

We're planning on going down for the 11:30/12:00/12:30 feeding cycle and I'll try to get some current snapshots to put up here, since I know you all want to see how they're doing day-to-day. I'm also working on a web-based photo album that I can just post most all of our baby pictures to and you guys can scroll through them all.

-John

Day 3: More improvements

Emily is getting so much stronger! She's taking a bottle like a champ, eating well and keeping it down. They're weaning her off the cannula, which is just pushing regular air, not oxygen anymore. The physical therapist assessed her today and said she's rating very highly, almost better than her developmental age. What a girl! She responded well to the light therapy and so she's off that now as well as having her IV fluids stopped. All she has to do now is eat, sleep and grow.

Noah has so much fight in his little body. Once he started taking his bottle, he attacks them! It's almost if he knows he has some catching up to do with his sisters. It *is* a competition, my son and you're doing a great job at it! He's almost ready to come off the light therapy and IV, maybe by tomorrow. He was fed by Mommy today and he finished all his formula and got some good cuddle time with before she had to go back up to bed.

Sydney had a session with the physical therapist this morning, too. That left her so tired that when Daddy tried to feed her at 12:30, she just couldn't stay awake. Poor girl was wiped out! The nurse went ahead and set up the tube feeding and I held her until it was all in her. She slept through the whole thing. Much as I wanted to just hold her a while longer, I let them put her back in her incubator so she could get her rest.

Amy and I are going to skip the next feeding cycle and check in on them a little later. We want to make sure the nurses have the time and space they need to take care of the beans.

-John

_____

I noticed some setting that was restricting who could leave comments and changed it so anyone can leave comments. Amy will be looking at this, maybe even posting when she goes home to recover and I know she'd love to hear from all of you checking in on her children.

Babies' First Easter!

Happy Easter!

My children are just two days old on their first official holiday. Daddy has to admit now that's it's pretty darn cute.

Mommy's holding little Noah, and Daddy has his girls (or do they have him?)

Note:

This blog is being created on Easter, so I've backdated the first few posts to match them up with when they happened.

At this point, Emily is still needing a little oxygen to help her breathe, so she has a little tube (cannula) in her nostrils. She likes to tug it out, though... Two days old and feisty already! She hasn't taken a bottle yet, but she's sweet and beautiful and her Daddy loves holding her while she sleeps.

Noah came off the oxygen his first night, and hasn't had any breathing trouble since. He was the smallest when born and also lost the most weight afterwards. Mommy calls him her "little bird-man" since he reminds her of a baby chick. He loves to be held and loves to be wrapped up tight in his blanket.

Sydney may have been the last one out, but she's lining up to be the first for everything! She was first to meet Mommy, first to take a bottle, first to try nursing and at this rate she'll be first to come home!

The neonatologist has examined all of them and declared them to be AMAZINGLY healthy, given how early they were born (first day of the 35th week). He reminded us that they still have a lot of growing and developing to do and will need a lot of care to begin with. He thinks it will be at least a couple weeks before any of them are ready to be released.

They are in the NICU at St. Francis Hospital South in Indianapolis. A wonderful hospital with excellent staff taking great care of our little miracles.

Amy and I are welcome to visit them in the NICU anytime other than their shift change. We can feed them, take their temperature, diaper them (yeech!) and hold them as long as we want. We are DEFINITELY taking advantage of that opportunity as best we can. Amy still needs her rest (she's supposed to be napping while I'm doing this), but when she feels up to it, I take her down to see her children.
